Recession: Online Advertising Drops

As some of you may know we are in a recession… If you somehow did not know that, then maybe you are part of the reason we are in a recession. For many people the recession wasn’t really effecting them, and there were certain areas of business that were not hit, one being Online Advertising. Well those times are gone and Online Advertising has been hit alright.

TechCrunch ran the numbers and only Google was able to show growth in that sector, while Yahoo, Microsoft, and AOL all showed decline. Many experts believe this will be one of the first areas to bounce back… I don’t think it will be. I’ve already seen agencies cut back on high end talent, but now when we see the average business cutting back on online spending not many know what to really think of it.

Personally I have never clicked on an ad, EVER in my 8 years of being online. If I was tempted, I searched for a review of the product, then searched it on Google/Yahoo/etc. I never understood the point in buying something from a 1 sentence description, or generally bad advertising copy, but that’s just me. So how it took this long for online spending to go down, is beyond me. I always assumed part of it’s growth was how cheap it was and how weak a person’s work ethic is while they are at work so they’re cruising the internet clicking on things somewhat loosely.

Whatever the case may be, it’s not a good sign and I hope by next quarter it has grown some.

I hate banks.
